Malmö konsthall, Malmö

I served as Director of Malmö Konsthall in Sweden until 2016.

Opened in 1975, Malmö Konsthall is one of the most important venues for contemporary art in Sweden and among the largest exhibition spaces in Europe. Designed by architect Klas Anshelm, the gallery is celebrated for its flexibility, abundant natural light, and minimalist architecture—an approach inspired by his visit to Constantin Brancusi’s studio in Paris. The institution presents internationally focused exhibitions each year, accompanied by a diverse programme of events including theatre, film, music, lectures, and debates. Its extensive educational activities engage both children and adults, and guided tours of current exhibitions are available by appointment.

Conceived as a response to the sociopolitical climate following Sweden’s 2014 elections, the exhibition transformed the art space into a dynamic think tank, exploring themes of trans-cultural integration, migration, xenophobia, and the construction of post-national identities.

At the heart of the exhibition was Christoph Schlingensief’s Animatograph – Iceland-Edition (House of Parliament/House of Obsession), a walkable multimedia installation combining sculpture, video, performance, and theater. This was Schlingensief’s first presentation in Sweden, offering a chaotic yet immersive reflection on 21st-century human nature and media saturation.

The exhibition was further enriched by a series of talks, screenings, concerts, and seminars featuring both emerging and established artists, writers, and sociologists.
