KUNSTHAL AARHUS, AARHUS
Until 2024, I served as Artistic Director of Kunsthal Aarhus in Denmark.
Founded in 1917 by the Aarhus Art Association of 1857 (Aarhus Kunstforening af 1857), Kunsthal Aarhus is one of Denmark’s oldest visual arts institutions—and among the oldest of its kind in Europe. It presents artistic programs that engage with traditional formats while also serving as a platform for research-based, participatory, and transdisciplinary experimentation. Over the years, through projects delivered to the highest professional standards, Kunsthal Aarhus has earned a reputation as one of the leading contemporary art venues in Denmark and the Nordic region.

“Jafri has created a thought-provoking exhibition that explores lithium’s dual role as both a treatment for mood disorders and a vital component in rechargeable batteries powering modern devices. Her work highlights three forms of contemporary labour: creative, reproductive, and industrial, while addressing mental health and consumer culture on a global scale.”

“The immersive quality of the video creates an omnipresent atmosphere, making the viewer feel they could reach out and touch the Grauballe Man. It resonates with the empty display cases beside it — like those in department stores where expensive watches are locked away. These cases glow with brand logos such as Citizen and Police, yet remain empty, save for a layer of dust, dirt, or sand. The scene feels melancholic — a sense of doom and a reflection on what it means to be human in the 21st century. It’s a highly relevant question, posed in a beautiful and captivating way.”
